Play Your Position with Mary Lou Kayser

Today’s starting quarterback is Lee Caharer, the founder and CEO of Double Forte PR and Digital Marketing that works with beloved and up and coming consumer technology and wine brands. Lee is known for practical solutions to big problems. She is the author of two books Millennials and Management The Essential Guide to Making It Work at Work and the Boomerang Principle Inspiring Lifetime Loyalty from Employees. Her big laugh and sense of humor have gotten her out of a lot of trouble and she splits time between San Francisco and New York City where she puts her degree in medieval history to work every single day.

Lee Caharer’s MVP player Stats:

Lee is in the digital marketing and national public relations world. She and her team provide companies with the tools they need to improve performance in intergenerational relationships, communication, and leadership.

In this episode, Lee talks about the changes in PR and digital marketing and how the industry has evolved from the ways we once communicated with each other to how we communicate today via social platforms. Times have changed drastically, so the importance of staying relevant is key to keeping up with technology and culture. Lee shares her thoughts about the roles each generational group has set for their standards and how this has created a conflict between what is right and what is relevant. She explains the benefits between different groups like Baby Boomer and Millenials and creates a positive and effective workplace when she brings the generations together. We get to hear some of the fumbles Lee has encountered through her journey as well as the winning touchdown moment she had while working at Sega.

We also get a glimpse into the world of San Francisco and Silicon Valley and what sustainability looks like there. Lee shares some thoughts and experiences she has had about what she's experienced in those two places. You won't want to miss that!

Having trouble finding something in your playbook that works for you? Try following these three key offensive strategies straight from Lee’s playbook: Listen loudly, make a decision and call the play, and decide if it’s working or not. Can you make it better and listen again and implement again? If yes, do it!

All right, Team! This month's pick for my book review is The Million-Dollar One-Person Business: Make Great Money. Work the Way You Like. Have the Life You Want. by Elaine Pofeldt.

If you or someone you know is curious about whether or not starting and building a business with one person at the helm is worth it -- meaning is it possible to generate a million dollars in revenue without hiring a bunch of employees -- then this is a great book to add to your personal library.

I put it in the growing category of the new world of work -- how many of us are choosing to show up and earn our livings today is profiled nicely in this book. It is well-written and a fast read. I got through it in one afternoon and that included lots of underlining and dog-earing!

Generating real money while keeping a business lean isn't a pipe dream anymore. Listen to the episode and leave your 5-star review of PYP in iTunes if you haven't already! I appreciate and read every single one.

Today’s starting quarterback is Oscar Trimboli, a coach, supervisor, speaker and author of several books including Deep Listening: Impact beyond Words, The 125/400 Rule: The Art and Science of Listening and Breakthroughs: How to Confront Your Assumptions.

Through his work with chairs, boards of directors and executive teams in local, regional and global organizations, Oscar has experienced firsthand the transformational impact leaders and organizations can have when they listen beyond the words. He consults with organizations including Cisco, Google, HSBC, News Corp, PayPal, Qantas, and TripAdvisor, helping executives and their teams listen to what’s unsaid by the customers and employees. Oscar lives in Sydney, Australia with his wife Jennie where he helps first-time runners and ocean swimmers conquer their fears. He also contributes to the cure for cancer as part of Can Too, a cancer research charity.

Oscar Trimboli MVP player Stats:

Oscar is fiercely devoted to teaching people the importance and significance of deep listening and how the brain reacts to information. He is on a quest to create 100 million deep listeners in the world by 2030 by sharing his knowledge and wisdom.

While growing up, Oscar recognized within himself some natural skills around having the capacity to listen well. Working at Microsoft for 11 years, Oscar asked to be part of the college graduate recruitment team where he realized they had a problem. He listened to what the graduates said about the recruiting process and eventually helped create a program that Microsoft took to 26 different countries all because Oscar took the time to listen. Around this time he felt challenged to make listening a significant part of his professional life.

In this episode, we talk about the life and career experiences Oscar had, who made him who is today, as well some of the influencers and mentors he had along his journey. He talks about the science of listening, the brain, the body, and ways we can reach our full potential in health, productivity, and in learning. He also shares some great tips such as how to use technology to minimize the use of our amygdala, the most primitive part of our brain that controls the fight or flight instinct.

Want to improve your listening skills? Listen through to the end of the episode to get three tips from Oscar on how to listen to yourself more effectively, maximize your ability to process ideas and increase your productivity.

Quotes

  • “The minute we come into the world, we come into the world kicking and screaming and wanting to be noticed and we spend the rest of our lives speaking. If we've spent the 20th century learning how to speak, I think the productivity hack of the 21st century is learning how to listen.”

  • “Mark Twain said there are only two days in your life that matters. The day you were born and the day you figure out why.”

  • “The biggest mistake most people make that blocks them from becoming deeper listener is they don't listen to themselves…it's impossible to listen to somebody else. When you've got a story going on in your head.”

  • “…drink a glass of water at every meeting because a hydrated brain is a listening brain. The brain consumes 25% of the blood sugars of the body, even though it's only 4% of the physical mass of the body”

  • “…are you choiceful in the way you use technology or are you just defaulting in?”

  • “use the technology. Don’t let it use you.”

  • “And so the question that poses to me and for you listening, who aren't you listening to? What aren't you listening to? What's going on in all aspects of your life because you're just listening to what people are saying rather than taking the time to go a little bit further and hearing what they haven't said?”

Andrew currently works with a non-profit called Young Entrepreneurs Business Week (YEBW), a liaison program for schools, companies, and students around Oregon. They teach business and professional skills to high schools students on a college campus over the summer, and their goal is to build the next generation of leaders and educate them, teaching things such as how to run a multimillion-dollar company, how to make their own business, invention skills, job interview skills, etiquette skills, and to make sure they have more opportunity with their future. Andrew’s job is to spread awareness of the program and to maintain relationships with the community.

Andrew also runs his business as a public speaking coach. He regularly coaches people who want to overcome their fear of presentations and figure out how they can engage more audiences when they present. Andrew is also the author of Tucan Play at This Game and his passion is helping people become better leaders with powerful presentation skills. Not to mention, he is the pun-master and considers himself “punnomenal.”

In this episode, we talk about why it’s important the YEBW program exists, the real-life experience the students get from it, and how Andrew’s past experiences played a significant role with his involvement at YEBW. Andrew also gives his perspective as a kid on the world financial crisis and how it impacted him growing up. He also shares how he learned from his moments of failure (or lightbulb moments) that have applied to the work he does today.

Andrew gives advice and strategies out of his playbook on ways people can set goals, manage time, get advice and mentorship, and most importantly, how to take action!

Quotes

  • “That’s why it’s so important to be part of this program where we’re helping show people this is what the professional world is like and we want to help you thrive as much as possible.”

  • “I said, “You know what, I need to stop caring what people think about me.” and that’s definitely like kind of a light bulb moment for me is that when you stop caring about what people think about you, people usually like you more for that [laughs].”

  • “People who have constructive feedback for you, they’re the ones who actually care about you and want you to do better…versus if someone just says, “oh good job” all the time or ignores what you’re doing, then they don’t really care about your future.”

  • “You’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.”

  • “I really encourage people to do is just constantly reach out and ask for advice and of course take action.”

Today’s starting quarterback is Steven Griffith whose mission in life is to teach us how to finally have that mind-blowing relationship with time. Steven is a nationally recognized author, speaker, researcher, and performance expert, former Chicago Golden Glove Boxer Champion in Illinois Heavyweight nicknamed "The Velvet Hammer," and considered one of the leading authorities on the connection between time, productivity, and performance. Steven worked with organizations such as Jimmy Kimmel Live, the U.S. Military, LAPD, NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL!

Steven Griffith’s MVP player Stats:

Steven is always on the field helping us get some of our time back. In his upcoming book with McGraw Hill The Time Cleanse: A Proven System to Eliminate Wasted Time, Realize Your Full Potential, and Reinvest in What Matters Most, Steven provides a strategic and effective approach to changing our relationship to time, allowing you to maximize your Energy, Focus & Performance. His revolutionary 3-step performance process will accelerate your personal productivity and rebalance your work-life relationship while simultaneously improving the quality of both. Based on two decades of experience working with thousands of clients, the Time Cleanse is the world’s first “timefulness” solution that both “adds time to your life, and life to your time” while increasing performance, reducing stress, and improving mindfulness.

Steven crushes the common complaint, “I don’t have enough time,” pointing out that we’ve been conditioned to be overstimulated multitaskers who always feel under “time pressure.” Steven shares strategies to help us break free from this illusion.

Steven traveled to places such as Thailand and Japan, studying mindfulness strategies, neuroscience, and even Einstein’s theory of relativity to come up with a solution of how to change the relationship we have with time and how to perform optimally with it. One of his key messages reminds us that time comes from us, that we need to focus on that and be present for it.

Steven also talks about his experience growing up playing football, thinking that’s what his success was meant to be. After suffering a series of hamstring injuries, he realized he was in a blind spot and needed to change course if he was going to make a difference in the world. This is considered one of his most life-changing moments that directed him to understand and share his knowledge of time management.

Want to hear some of the tips, tricks, and strategies from Steven’s time management playbook? Make sure to play this episode!
