Play Your Position with Mary Lou Kayser (general)

Today, my guest is Chad T Jenkins, a visionary wizard who knows how to alchemize friction into gold for entrepreneurs and companies all over the world looking to grow through innovation.

He recently launched his latest book, Friction Fuel [the secret to listening strategically and leveraging complaints to keep your business running on premium]. We talk a lot about his books; he has another one: Just Add a Zero, which I also highly recommend.

What's cool about Chad is he offers simple frameworks you can use to expand your leadership skills, as well as some practical exercises you can do today to tap into new ideas and an endless stream of innovation.

Chad is part business strategist, part contrarian and part philosopher who understands what’s happening in business today, and I think you're going to walk away after listening to our conversation with a renewed sense of possibility and your own potential.

This is a really fun episode. It's rare that I get to talk to two amazing guests at the same time. "Mike&Bo" aka Mike Merrigan and Bo Kort are best friends and they also have built a successful real estate investment portfolio together that funds their freedom. Over the past 30 years, Mike and Bo have acquired hundreds of properties and built over 43 companies. Now, they want to teach others how two small-town guys from Arizona did it—and how you can too. Are you fed up with the typical financial freedom "gurus"? Mike & Bo are the breath of fresh air you've been so desperately needing.

These guys are the real deal! Connect with Mike & Bo here: https://mikeandbo.biz/

How do you get people to trust you when they don’t even know you? If you aren’t a thought leader, you’re a commodity. There’s no middle ground. And the most powerful, exciting, and fun way to rescue yourself from the commodity trap is by having a book of your own.

My guest today is New York Times bestselling author and the world’s most experienced ghostwriter Michael Levin, who is responsible for the writing, editing, planning, and publishing of more than 1,000 books over a 30-year career. He has written for the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, HuffPost, LA Times, Boston Globe, and many other top outlets.

Michael's ghostwriting clients include Boeing and Ford CEO Alan Mulally, baseball Hall of Famer Dave Winfield, motivational speaker Zig Ziglar (he edited Zig’s last book), NFL legend Pat Summerall, and countless other leaders in business, sports, broadcasting, real estate, finance, insurance, and many other fields.

Anna Maria Ponzi is the former owner and past president of Ponzi Vineyards in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. From the age of four, she’s had the rare experience of working in every aspect of the winery. She helped plant its original vines, worked on the bottling line, hosted guests in the tasting room and has made countless national and international sales calls. Anna Maria has served the state’s wine industry in myriad ways, including serving as an early ambassador for Oregon wine both nationally and internationally while building Oregon wine country into a travel destination.

After earning her degree in journalism from the University of Oregon, she worked in Boston’s publishing industry until returning to the rural family business in 1991. Soon after, she was joined by her winemaking sister and the two young women trailblazed the growing tide of female vintners. Simultaneously, they grew the business from an annual production of 10,000 to over 50,000 cases and increased its vineyard holdings from 20 to 140 acres. This ownership distinguished Ponzi Vineyards as the nation’s only winery solely owned and operated by second-generation sisters at the time.

She is recognized for establishing a premiere travel destination with the opening of the valley’s first seated wine experience among other visitor attractions in the area. Her memoir ‘Pinot Girl’ was released in celebration of the winery’s 50th Anniversary in 2020. A year later, she and her sister successfully negotiated the sale of the winery to the esteemed French house Société Jacques Bollinger of Champagne, France. In 2023, she created “The Four-Ounce Pour”, a keynote that reflects on her life in wine and how bringing intentionality and balance into our lives creates greater meaning and impact.

In today's episode, David and I explore the profound journey of leadership and how it evolves with time.

Reflecting on his own path, David has come to realize that leadership isn't just about titles or positions—it's a dynamic journey that evolves with time and experience. From his early days in the Boy Scouts, where he first tasted leadership responsibility, to building and leading teams in his business ventures, every step has been a lesson in growth and accountability. What's truly fascinating is how his perception of leadership has shifted—from leading himself to guiding a team, and now, nurturing leadership qualities in his own son.

One of the big takeaways for David about leadership as he reflects on his own journey is this:

Leadership isn't confined to the boardroom; it extends into our personal lives, shaping our roles as parents and mentors. Embracing this multifaceted aspect of leadership brings richness to our experiences and opportunities for continuous improvement. Let's remember, leadership is not just about leading others—it's about inspiring growth, fostering resilience, and embracing responsibility at every turn.

About David Braithwaite

With several years of experience as an Associate Coach for Strategic Coach® and as a financial planner, David Braithwaite has built a reputation for his empathetic approach to coaching and facilitating meaningful conversations. As we come to the end of this year, it's a natural time to reflect. The holidays and the craziness leading up to Christmas are behind us now. This is a really fertile time to do some self-examination and put the past 12 months of your life under the microscope. What worked? What didn’t? What do you wish you did more of? What unconventional adventures are calling you in the new year? Are you living a full life or are you playing it safe by someone else’s rules?

All this and more in today’s episode.

Have you ever seen a performance that moved you at the soul level? I have many times and it just happened again the other night when I was watching the Country Music Awards. I don't have a long history with country music as I've been a rock n roll girl most of my life. However, several country artists are putting out music these days I'm drawn to which is part of the inspiration behind today's episode. We can learn a lot about playing our positions more effectively from watching and studying people who are at the top of their game including people like Chris Stapleton and what he symbolizes for all of us on a universal level.

Richard Newman is the Founder of Body Talk, a business that helps people improve their communication and impact. In the past 23 years his team has trained over 120,000 business leaders around the world. One client gained over $1 Billion in new business in just one year using Richard’s techniques, winning 100% of their new business pitches.

When Richard was 18, he started his mission to discover the core principles of communication. As part of this mission, he lived in the foothills of the Himalayas with Tibetan monks who spoke no English. They had to communicate non-verbally to understand each other. Have you ever felt like you're in a maze, searching for the elusive exit? I definitely have. Those times in my life when my vision and direction were muddy at best, I got so caught up in the whirlwind of life, I forgot the power of having a clear vision and direction. It's like having a treasure map without 'X' marking the spot. But here’s the harsh and compelling truth: underestimating the influence of a vision can be akin to sailing without a compass—it leaves you wandering aimlessly in the vast ocean of opportunities.

In today's episode, I share my own experience with getting clear about the direction and vision of my life despite the chaos of the past two years that continues to impact where I'm going and why. I also share an excellent exercise you can do to get some clarity about the direction and vision of your life as we wind down one year and look ahead to a new one. It's really powerful and can give you peace of mind that might be missing from your life right now.

Well Team -- I've achieved a new milestone here at the Play Your Position Podcast!

Today's episode featuring the super accomplished, insightful, and hilarious Dr. Taylor Hartman marks number 500 of the show.

500 y'all! I am celebrating!

I remember thinking way back in the dark ages of early 2014 when I first started podcasting that having 50 episodes sounded impressive.

Here I am with 500 and I am proud of my work.

I am honored to have had the opportunity to converse about leadership and life with as many wonderful humans as I've had since I started.

And I'm grateful to all of you who tune in to the show each week.

I love you, Team PYP!

Are you ready for kickoff???

Let's go!

About Dr. Taylor Hartman

Through The People Code (formerly published as The Color Code) and The Character Code, Dr. Hartman provides a universal message, simple and profound: life is about relationships.

As an author, psychologist, corporate consultant and leadership coach, his life’s work has centered on providing an insightful system for improving your understanding of yourself and others and strengthening your day-to-day relationships with the People Code Personality Profile.

The People Code explains the “why” behind the “what” by identifying four basic personality types and showing you how to use “color profiles” to cultivate rich and balanced character and relationships.

In today's conversation, he goes into detail about the four colors. You will walk away with a new understanding of why you do what you do and perhaps more importantly, why others do what they do!

Use the code KAYSER30 to save when you sign up to take the powerful and life-changing Hartman Personality Profile Test here: https://taylorhartman.com/assessment-information/

Of all the assessments I've taken over the years (and I've taken them all), the Hartman Personality Assessment is by far the simplest to understand AND the most effective for strengthening relationships.

Most of us are approaching our health care from an outdated, average model based on data that doesn't help anyone experience exceptional health. Get ready to have your mind blown about what's possible for each of us in coming years when what Dr. Brigitte Piniewski discusses becomes standard in the healthcare system. I haven't stopped thinking about what she talks about since we recorded this episode. She is leading the charge in something truly revolutionary.

Dr. Brigitte Piniewski is a physician, ex-healthcare executive, researcher, author and angel investor who has witnessed healthcare from almost every angle. More recently, while providing investor education in the Web3 ethos, she appreciated the potential for pivotal health transformation now possible using new distributed ledger approaches.

However, our Health industry would need multidisciplinary experts to update their understanding of the possibilities Web3 might enable. Thus her book, “Wealthcare: Demystifying Web3 and the Rise of Personal Data Economies” provides a starter-pack of sorts to engage diverse stakeholders to share a common vision and vocabulary. Together we should expect to design and deliver both health and wealth to our communities in perpetuity.

Tony Castillo is a leader in the wellness industry with a passion for teaching about optimizing our health and fitness. We had a lot of fun discussing the myths and misunderstandings flooding the Internet these days about health and fitness, and ways to tell the truth from the lies. Not only is Tony knowledgable, but he loves to laugh. We also shared personal stories about the pain we each experienced as fat kids in a culture that is not kind to people who carry extra weight. I learned a lot about the critical role of nutrition for optimal performance and you will, too.

About Tony Castillo

Tony’s journey began as an overweight middle schooler and continued throughout high school until he decided to go on a “diet.” Unfortunately, this resulted in unsustainable weight loss. Tony’s weight fluctuated in college due to a lack of nutrition knowledge, following fad diets, supplements that didn’t work, and unsustainable habits. This inspired him to understand how nutrition played a
crucial role in the human body.

Today, Tony’s passion is to teach others how healthy lifestyle modifications optimize performance in all areas of life. He has worked at the University of Florida and with the Toronto Blue Jays, and now focuses on helping individuals become elite performers, whether they are business owners or professional athletes.

Tony graduated from Florida International University in Miami with a B.S. in Biology, B.A. in Chemistry, and an M.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics. As a Registered Dietitian credentialed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, his unique area of expertise lies in helping individuals optimize their performance through nutrition, with a specific focus on sustainable weight management and lifestyle modifications. Tony’s background in dietetics and specialization in sports nutrition has equipped him with the skills and knowledge needed to help athletes, business leaders, and anyone looking to improve their performance.

In today's solo episode, I dive into a topic we don't often discuss -- certainly not collectively or culturally. But it's an important topic and it's one that affects each of us throughout our lives. I'm talking about the way death impacts us as leaders -- of our lives, in our businesses, and at work -- and ways we can keep moving forward even when life as we've known it no longer exists.

When it comes to building networks, many believe that you need to know a lot of people or spend a lot of time networking, but Alice Tang has proven otherwise. As a Vice President and Partner at a full service multi-generational full service financial planning firm in Oregon, a top female producer in the financial industry, and a sought-after speaker, she has built her business and success by focusing on creating and deepening relationships one connection at a time.

Originating from humble beginnings in Hong Kong, Alice quickly realized that relationships are the key to success as she watched her father build his business. As the first in her family to earn a college degree, Alice graduated from the University of London, where she met her husband, Horace. She immigrated to the U.S. without a network, family, or a community and started a career in financial advising.

After years of following the “tried and true” advice for networking and building a business, Alice realized it is not scalable, there are only so many hours in the day! So, she set out to create a system that is not only scalable but also has exponentially grown her network, business, and success ever since.

As an advocate for female professionals and helping the next generation succeed, Alice has unveiled her process to the world and now helps professionals catapult their success and that of their networks through her no-nonsense practical approach to building connections.

What does it take to optimize a small business for scale?

For many small business owners, scaling can feel overwhelming and out of reach. In today's episode, I talk with Paul Jackson who sees things very differently. Paul is the Founder and CEO at Method — the complete process automation tool for businesses that use QuickBooks and Xero. He believes that building small business software with a one-sizefits-all mentality is lazy and outdated. This firm belief, paired with his experience as a self-taught coder and entrepreneur, resulted in Paul’s empathy for small business owners. It also sparked his passion for changing the software landscape. While living in a bike shed during university, Paul built and sold his first business, QXpress (a field service scheduling app).

After that, Paul started Method, a company driven to equalize the future of small business technology. Method is an entirely customizable platform for small businesses that want to simplify their unique way of working. Method is best known for its flagship product, Method:CRM.

As the co-founder and CEO of Groove, an online coworking community and mobile app for solopreneurs, Josh is building on his passion for community to help transform the way people on wavy career paths (solopreneurs, freelancers, creatives) can find support and human connection to help them accomplish great things.

Josh’s career itself follows a wavy path — after working as an engineer, he studied meditation as a way to combat his burnout, spending time learning at ashrams in India. He brought together his spiritual practices with bringing people together through cultural events and programming as Managing Director at London’s Village Underground and working on festivals like Wilderness Festival.

He continued freelancing as a strategy and innovation consultant. He believes in work-life harmony — how we work shapes how we live, and vice versa. He experienced this firsthand as an exec at WeWork in the office of the CEO working across the business.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Josh and his co-founders saw that the world had changed, along with our traditional work systems. Groove was created as a response to that, and is here to support the next generation of solopreneurs as they break open the ideas of how we can connect and work on energizing projects.

Every leader knows doing everything ourselves is a cardinal sin...yet so many of us continue to insist "no one else can do what we do as well as we can do what we do."

Yikes. This mindset gets a lot of us into scalding hot water when we could be leisurely swimming in a pool that's at just the right temperature.

In today's conversation with the Chief Revenue Officer for BELAY, Lisa Seal guides us through the process of handing over tasks and systems to capable allies who want to help us grow our businesses. And here's the thing -- delegation is a skill we can use in EVERY aspect of our lives, including running our homes, managing our families, and the like.

Lisa utilizes her vast experience in growth management across several industries and various sales environments to work with sales professionals, empowering them to achieve – and exceed – their targets and help organizations grow.

A major goal of Lisa’s is helping clients climb higher by giving them the space, time, and energy to grow their business. Aiming beyond increasing profits, Lisa helps businesses increase their reach, provide more jobs, and prioritize their loved ones over their time in the office.

She believes that team collaboration and a healthy culture are the core of every department, allowing for extraordinary organizational growth. She is a goal-driven, thoughtful, competitive, compassionate leader with a profound love of learning and reading.

It is her mission to encourage others so they may achieve all that they dream.

John Ovrom is the President and Founder of Exit Consulting Group, Inc. (ECG). He founded the company on a simple principle – the desire to help fellow entrepreneurs. What started as John helping friends and previous business connections, quickly evolved into a consulting business, and the creation of The Ovrom Group, that became the Exit Consulting Group, Inc. in 2009. John has an entrepreneurial spirit, and is constantly coming up with new, inspiring, creative, and innovative ideas.

A serial entrepreneur, John founded his first company OSSO Construction, Inc. in 1991, and ran the custom home remodeling company, along with several additional construction-based companies, for 14 years with his dad and cousin. After going through the process of selling his company, he realized the need for a service provider who can step into the business, develop a strategic exit plan, and manage the transition.

John is truly passionate about helping people and solving problems. His fearless persistence, openness, honesty, and intelligence make him an immense asset to his clients. He approaches problems by starting with the solution and working backwards. Always searching for the “win”, he asks the same question of clients and staff alike: “How can we use your strengths to best solve this problem?”

Besides his entrepreneurial work, John supports the Rotary Club International, serving his Coronado club in varying capacities, including President, and he served as past president of the Coronado Chamber of Commerce. One of John’s greatest joys was coaching his sons’ sports teams while they were growing up, including basketball, soccer, and baseball.

John’s favorite activities include fishing, lobster diving, hiking, travel, hanging out with his family, and spending as much time as possible playing in Baja, Mexico.

John’s WIN is creating long-lasting value for his clients by finding unique, effective solutions to business challenges.

  • The differences between masculine and feminine energy and what we need to know about each kind for generating success in business and life;
  • Why everyone has both kinds of energy present at all times regardless of how you identify;
  • What each kind of energy means to us as leaders at work and in the home;
  • "Third Love" -- what it is, how to find it, and why it's the most powerful kind of love of all
  • Moving beyond trauma to fully receive our truest calling

Plus, MiMi leads us through a fantastic meditation so if you can, listen to this episode in a place where you can safely close your eyes to get the full experience. Please don't close your eyes if you are driving!

MiMi Chau first appeared here on the Play Your Position Podcast in 2014.

A lot has happened in MiMi's life since then!

In Part 1 of my conversation with MiMi Chau, MiMi shares the latest iteration of her leadership journey.

Not only did she meet her soulmate Henry since the last time we talked, but she had her son and a few business experiences that didn't work out.

Today, MiMi is a Business and Transformation Coach + Reiki Master who helps clients honor their Divine Feminine in all aspects of their lives, including health, business, and love.

Through business coaching combined with holistic healing methods like Reiki to create balance, and manifest true potential for a fulfilling life, MiMi guides clients to trust their intuition, get clear on their soul purpose, and take action to create the life they desire.

The traditional concept of hustle is associated with masculinity and a focus on achievement, often at the cost of personal well-being and maybe at the cost of your piece of mind. Balancing this with feminine energy, which emphasizes balance, intuition, and self-care can lead to a more fulfilling and successful life. It involves finding a balance between drive, focus, determination and compassion, love, joy, service, and self-care.

As a mother, entrepreneur, coach, intuitive healer, spiritual seeker, and plant-medicine woman, MiMi has a passion for empowering and uplifting women. Founder of start-up Goddess Playground, MiMi is committed to deepening human connections in communities where people support each other.

One of the biggest barriers to experiencing more fulfillment, more joy, and more happiness in life is the lack of skill we have in talking to ourselves intelligently.

We talk to ourselves all day long...and what we say can definitely use some improvement! I work on developing this skill every day and it does make a difference.

In today's episode, I share a couple of ways to do this so that you can benefit from an increase in intelligent self-talk.

Mark Yegge, the Wealth Architect, has spent his entire life learning and teaching people about wealth and the importance of a success mindset. He started investing when he was 12 – and made enough to buy his first car at 16. Mark started, and later sold, his Wall Street software company - the company that ushered in after-hours trading. He then “retired” at the age of 39, but not before growing the company from nothing to a $30-million dollar enterprise. Today's audible is all about artificial intelligence (AI) and the growing role it's playing in how we live and work.

Ultimately, we each have to ask ourselves, is our brand, our reputation, the kind of work that we do worth turning over to robots?

Are we destined to become a copy of a copy of a copy?

Formulas are great for chemical companies.

Recipes come in handy when you’re looking to make something you’ve never made before. Like a 3 layer orange lemon sunrise surprise cake.

Step by steps are excellent ways of learning new, useful skills.

But here’s the thing about formulas.

Their success and execution depend on any number of variables that are often not in our control.

Getting the exact same results as the original is possible but not common.

Eventually you have to learn how to rely on your inner compass to get you where you want to go.

Tim Tortora started working in Hollywood over 30 years ago as a tape operator in a recording studio and worked his way up through the ranks to CFO by 2008. He learned a lot along the way and worked with some amazing people and some of the biggest companies ( Harpo Films, Mandalay Entertainment, Sony Pictures, Disney, TriStar Pictures, Columbia Pictures). He did it all having no family connection or friends who sat in key positions in the business.

Since he started working as a CFO in 2008, the industry changed substantially and his client list migrated to working with content creators who produce indie features, TV movies, feature films, branded content, blogs and online short form series.

During his career, Tim has served as Executive in Charge of Production and Finance for Oprah Winfrey’s feature film & TV production arm, Harpo Films, in charge of all aspects of production on such films as “Tuesdays With Morrie” (Jack Lemmon, Hank Azaria), “Amy & Isabelle” (Elisabeth Shue), “The Wedding” (Halle Berry), and “Before Women Had Wings” (Ellen Barkin).

Zack Booth is the Founder of Driving For Dollars Mastery, where he helps people replicate his success through real estate investing. Just a few years ago, Zack was a window cleaner. You can even find his window cleaning tutorial videos on YouTube with millions of views. He even ended up on the history channel because of those window cleaning tutorial videos. Although he achieved success with his window cleaning business, he always dreamt of being a real estate investor.

Taking a leap of faith, he walked away from window cleaning, and within a handful of years, he was making over a million dollars per year from real estate investing. Zack now has his own company, a successful podcast and YouTube channel where he dedicates his time giving back and helping others get started in the competitive game of real estate.

This year, Zack launched the Driving For Dollars Mastery podcast and it is already in the top 1% of podcasts in global popularity. Recently on his YouTube channel, he did a 40 day challenge. The goal was to turn $1,000 into $40,000, he was wildly successful, making $93,000 and also buying two rentals with over $100,000 of equity.

When he isn’t helping people make money through real estate, Zack can be found spending time with his wife and two children and hiking the mountains of the Western United States.

When you think about a work environment, what immediately comes to mind?

For many people, their work environment is a physical place -- an office, a renovated closet, even the kitchen table.

My guest today talks about another kind of work environment -- our digital spaces, where many of us spend considerable time as well.

Ian Robinson and his team at Enliven design and build highly functional, collaborative web apps for expert operational and project management processes. Ian works with established professional services firms - from construction to accounting - which have a unique worldview and proprietary operations to build a sustainable and healthy culture of expertise through the ongoing practice of product development.

While Ian’s natural bent toward process improvement and the development skills he has cultivated over the years make him an astute leader, it is his genuine desire to help companies create healthier workplaces through custom software that sets him apart from a largely sterile sector. For Ian, a successful project is one that uses software as a means of making people’s daily lives and jobs more enjoyable.

Content Anxiety Syndrome is the name of a disorder I made up to explain what's happening to a lot of people. It is yet another unnecessary and heartbreaking side effect of the Internet Age plaguing far too many amazing people who have fallen into the trap of thinking they must “make more content” or else risk irrelevance. My personal experience with self-promotion isn't exactly the poster board for how to do it well.

Like most people, I'd rather spend my time doing just about anything else besides telling the world about myself.

Unfortunately, there is a direct correlation between how effective our self promotion efforts are and how many zeroes are in our bank account.

In today's episode, I share some tips about how to self promote, and provide an example of a self promotion piece I'm sharing on my LinkedIn feed this week.

You can see how I used my self promotion piece on my website here

And speaking of self promotion -- my latest book, The Far Unlit Unknown -- will be available on October 30, 2022. So be sure to check it out and get a copy!
