"The truth will set you free… but not before it has its way with you."

-David Foster Wallace, award-winning American author

In today's episode, I explore this quote and the role Truth plays in assisting us as we walk the road to becoming more of who we are. Why is it that so many people go through their lives without ever getting at the truth about why we're here with this one precious life we've been granted? Why do we waste so much time on things that don't matter when we could be exploring the Truth about ourselves so as to live a more extraordinary life? This is what's on tap in today's episode...enjoy!

You're in for a special treat! Today I'm talking with Nigel Bennett (Founder of AquaGaurd), Todd Palmer (INC 5000 CEO & President 6x), and Andy Buyting (Founder & CEO of Tulip Media Group) about what they call "lessons from the edge" and how we can thrive in a time of massive change. Each of my guests has suffered financial uncertainty, major loss, and serious doubt about whether or not he could move forward.

They call themselves the "3CEOs" and they are currently on a global virtual tour helping people find hope and optimism in what can feel like a grim situation.

They hit on topics including facing bankruptcy, finding an identity outside a family business, and having to make the painful decision to fire your entire staff and start from scratch. They don’t mince words. They genuinely care about entrepreneurial and business success.

You’re going to love this conversation!

I worked for a company in the 2000s where one of the messages leadership drilled into our heads was “You’re not here to be average.”

The products we sold were not average. The sales team was not average. The owner of the company was not average. And these were good things. I loved hearing this message over and over again because it helped me when times got tough, as times did then, and as times do now.

Reminding myself that I’m not here to be average still helps center me all these years later.

I got to thinking about this phrase today when I was scrolling through Instagram and I saw a list Ramit Sethi posted on his feed called “5 thoughts on standing out.” If you haven’t heard of Ramit, he’s the author of the best selling book I Will Teach You to Be Rich. He has also built a sizable online business based on that book.

Here’s what’s on the list:

-The rarest thing in the world is a strong point of view

-You’re not trying to serve everyone, just the right people

-There’s always room for the best

-Creating a real business should be hard and it should take time

-Choose your heroes carefully

What stands out for you on this list? Are you choosing to live an average life or an extraordinary one? How can you tell?

That's the topic of today's episode.

When actors forget their lines during filming, they are known to call out to the crew off-camera, "LINE!" Cue cards in hand, the crew responds, the actors remember, and filming resumes -- or doesn't, as the case may be when actors for whatever reason cannot recall what they are supposed to say.

Today was one of those days when I thought I was ready for my scenes...but discovered I needed help with my lines halfway through the session. The lesson I share with you is short and sweet and oh-so-relatable as we all continue doing our best in conditions that have thrown us off our lines in a million different ways.

I believe in the ethos of hard work. This entire podcast celebrates hard work and the results that can come from hard work and the stories of people who made a decision to not just show up, to not just be themselves, but to work so hard that winning at what they do is the only outcome possible.

What causes organizations to break down more often than anything else? That's the focus of my conversation with today's guest, Kim Bohr.

Kim Bohr is an author, in-demand speaker, and coveted executive advisor. She is also the CEO of The Innovare Group. The firm that is known for diagnosing and repairing organizational and leadership disconnects, working with both the companies and leaders to help them assess, align, and accelerate the strategic priorities that impact talent, execution, and business growth. Kim works with VC-funded start-ups, mid-market companies, and progressive corporate teams often guiding the sales, marketing, and operations functions of these organizations, helping them face the fact that a Solid Strategy Won’t Survive Poor Execution.

She created a career journal called Successes, Failures, & Lessons Learned that was published on Amazon just a few short months ago.

The brutality of someone not loving us anymore or even in the first place is the fuel for some of the greatest music, art, literature, and poetry humanity has ever created. Every opera ever made has at its core the theme of betrayal and lost love. So does every play by Shakespeare. Old-style country music does too. Many music artists have become millionaires singing about suffering and cheating and lying and getting kicked around.

In this second part of exploring the chapter "People Are Not Loyal and Loving All the Time" from David Richo's book The Five Things We Cannot Change and the Happiness We Find by Embracing Them, I offer some ways of working through the times when we've been betrayed or feeling the brutal sting of having our heart broken.

Today I am going to teach about the fifth thing we cannot change based on David Richo’s book titled The Five Things We Cannot Change and The Happiness We Find by Embracing Them. If you’ve been listening for a while, you’ve probably caught the last several episodes. Each one builds on the other but I’ve also designed them so they stand on their own.

So far I’ve covered everything changes and ends, things don’t always go according to plan, life isn’t always fair, and pain is a part of life.

This final segment is called people are not loving and loyal all the time and if I’m being honest, this chapter is arguably the meatiest so I’ve decided to break it into two separate shows starting with part 1 today. I’ll frame the content for you and then in the next episode, I’ll get into some tactics you can use to work through the times in life when you’re facing this truth.

In today's episode, I tackle a topic most of us work hard to avoid: pain. It's the fourth reality about life we cannot change that author David Richo writes about in his book, The Five Things We Cannot Change and the Happiness We Find by Embracing Them.

I also draw some wisdom from Pema Chodron's book, When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times, which I highly recommend.

We fight against this one all the time, but there's no escaping the truth that life is not always fair. How can we work with this reality so that we don't live in a constant state of self-pity, jealousy, bitterness, or wanting to get back at others?

That's what I talk about in today's episode.
