He has grown over 200,000 social followers in his latest business, completely behind the scenes. Andy Buyting is the founder of Tulip Media Group. He is a leader in thought leadership and content marketing. His “integrated content” strategy has served both himself and his clients exceedingly well. You might recognize his name from being a part of the 3 CEOs troop who were on the show earlier this spring.

Andy has delivered countless keynote presentations and workshops to entrepreneurs, business leaders, and marketers all over North America. His audiences leave his keynote addresses with a better understanding of their true brand and the value they hold in the eye of their customers. They also leave with easy to execute content marketing strategies that can be immediately integrated into their marketing.

Most towns these days are dotted with all sorts of businesses that are part of the franchising business model. Just about everything you can think of can be franchised -- from food to car repair to crafting supplies. Chances are good you have shopped at a franchise at least once this year and in turn, helped out a local business owner. Ever wonder about the people who choose to own franchises or what it takes to decide which franchise is the right franchise? Why do some franchises work out while others close their doors? In today's episode, you will get an inside look at the world of franchising from my guest, Kim Daly. Kim has spent the last 20 years helping people achieve financial freedom by enabling them to find the perfect franchise opportunities. Her skill for matching a client’s background, interests, skills, finances, and life goals to the ideal opportunity has made her one of the top franchise consultants in the country. Enjoy the show!

As the founder of Business Builder Camp, Wayne Herring has helped men across the country grow their businesses into successful and thriving enterprises. However, there is so much more to his story than simply “coach” or “consultant.” Wayne has worked as a specialty drilling and blasting contractor and an organic farmer. He has run ultra marathons, gone on epic road trips, and is a 1997 Montana state arm wrestling champion. He loves to hunt and farm, but he also enjoys yoga and meditation. Some have described Wayne as a renaissance man, but he thinks that is a strange term for the son of a coal miner.

Highlights from our conversation:

• How to make the vision in your head a reality
• Living a fulfilling life of adventure, family, and satisfaction as you grow your business
• Working to be a good dad and husband while growing your business
• Why we need people to help part the “curtains” in life
• Mentors in Wayne’s life and the value of having them in yours
• Camp / Rendezvous - reasons to gather with other sharp high performers
• What got you here won’t get you there... a trap for high performing business builders

Elsie Escobar is a die-hard podcast junkie who lives, breathes, and works the medium since 2006. She has worked for Libsyn (where PYP is hosted) since 2007 and has had the pleasure of working with hundreds of podcasters, sharing tools for better production, educating them in the fast-moving podcasting space, as well as cultivating a strongly engaged community through The Feed: The Official Libsyn podcast which she both co-hosts and produces. The Feed’s sole focus is on keeping people podcasting.

Elsie has pulsed with the podcasting space and grown from someone who had NO IDEA what a digital recorder was or how to record anything to someone who currently offers advice to thousands of people a month.

  • She knows the heart and soul of podcasters and podcasting well beyond iTunes and public media.
  • She has the unique perspective and expertise of a podcast listener, independent podcast producer, and podcasting industry analyst/personality.
  • She has co-run the largest community for women in podcasting with a corresponding podcast (of course) called She Podcasts whose sole mission is to empower women to continue to share their voices while creating a safe community of podcasting education and support.

As a mom of two daughters, Elsie has been known to say that “my MacBook Air and my iPhone are like my adopted children.” Her sense of humor and all-around good nature make this episode extra fun.

In today's episode, Tim Leonard takes us inside the world of college athletics. As a leader in the industry, Tim is passionate about student-athletes and how playing sports is where many young people learn critical leadership skills along with other important lessons for living a successful life. We spoke a couple of months into the COVID-19 situation when the fall season of college sports was still up in the air. Like most leaders, Tim exudes an optimistic attitude about the future of college sports despite the current challenges colleges and universities face. His point of view is inspirational and exemplifies what it means to show up as a leader in a complex world.

About Tim Leonard

Tim Leonard is in his seventh year as the Director of Athletics at Towson University in Maryland. Tim joined the Towson staff in the fall of 2013 after serving as the senior associate athletics director for external affairs at Southern Methodist University (SMU). Since coming to Towson, he has overseen continued success both on the field and in the classroom. Some of the successes his leadership has contributed to include conference titles in women's basketball and men's lacrosse plus the first NCAA FCS Playoff berth for football since 2013. Many athletes are excelling in the classroom as well, finding their names on the Dean’s List. Tim earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Boise State. The Twin Falls, Idaho native and his wife, Monica, have two children, Hayley and Nathan.

Since collaborating on a film project for the first time in 2013, Will Cuddy and Zach Feiner have spent countless hours working together on projects that have taken them all over the world. As their artistic and business partnership has grown, they’ve come to a realization - the more hours they spend together, the closer friends they become and the better work they produce.

Zach and Will have co-directed numerous projects developing the technical and creative tools necessary to operate in any scenario. From Peru to Haiti to Cannes and back home again, they’ve always attempted to do one thing - cultivate friendships that allow their new friends to tell stories that they wouldn’t tell to someone that they weren’t friends with. So far, it’s worked pretty well and there's no end in sight.

Based out of Portland, Oregon, Will Cuddy and Zach Feiner are leading players in the local indie film scene, as well as accomplished commercial artists who produce exceptional digital ads for companies of all sizes. With several awards under their belts including an entry in the 2020 Cannes Film Festival for their short film "Waiting Game," these two filmmakers -- who also happen to be great friends -- are ones to watch in the years to come.

When my kids were small, one of the favorite bedtime books in our house was Eric Carle’s “The Very Busy Spider.” If you’re not familiar with this book, it’s one that teaches children about focusing on work that matters. With delightful illustrations, the story has several different kinds of animals asking the spider who is spinning her web to do things with them. The horse asks if she wants to go for a ride, the goat asks if she wants to jump on the rocks, the dog asks if she wants to chase a cat… but her answer to all these invitations is no thanks, she is busy spinning her web.

In today's episode, I talk about how to be more like a spider and less like a horse, dog, or goat. It's fun, it's relevant -- and always with a simple yet powerful takeaway!

For years Derek Stone had dreams of becoming a musician. This road didn’t lead him to success, however, it led him to Nashville, TN. Struggling to live as a starving artist with a family to feed, it was then he thought “there’s got to be a better way.” He went through an early life crisis, changing careers with the help of mentors, and watching YouTube. He took his God-given talent of creativity and transferred it from being something you hear to something that you can see. As it turned out, the construction industry was his road to success, the “better way” he had longed for. In three short years, he grew a small one-man show into a company with $1.2 million in gross revenue.

He credits his success today to one decision he made as a senior in high school: forgiving his dad and taking a different path in life than his parents. He blamed his dad for every bad thing he went through as a child: from being sexually abused and going hungry, to taking cold showers because the power got cut off. He was a bitter teenager and wanted a better life, so when the opportunity presented itself, he took it and chose forgiveness. 36 years have passed since the beginning of his story and he is currently living his best life. He enjoys hunting, fishing, knife making, and hanging out with his family. He also loves empowering people to re-tool and change their lives.

Today I put a special pin on the map of my podcasting journey -- pin #300. That’s right, Today’s episode is number 300, and I am proud to say I did it! I achieved a goal that once seemed very, very far away.

I have my guests to thank, I have you to thank, I am thanking myself for setting this goal and achieving it on the day I said I would, July 9th, 2020. That doesn’t always happen. There are plenty of times in my life when I didn’t hit a goal on the date I put on the calendar.

Today is not one of those days.

Today is a day of celebration. Glad you're choosing to celebrate with me!

Times are different today with so many of us working remotely. Working with clients and building the right client systems to maximize client results and profit is tough during normal conditions. Add the layer of being at distance and the entire game changes.

Ever wonder what your clients are actually thinking? Why they’re not taking action or seemingly standing in the way of their own success? The truth is generating client success (and the retention, referrals & raving fans that follow) is a system that can be optimized and engineered.

Today's guest is Tony Banta. He is a systems engineer, innovation consultant, and host of the Client Whisperer Show. Beginning his career as a self-taught software developer, Tony quickly realized that the best code could never solve broader leadership issues within organizations. Today Tony works with other client-businesses to maximize client results, increase client retention, and streamline the client fulfillment experience. Tony’s writing has been featured in Forbes, The Huffington Post, and Recruiter Magazine to name a few. Tony and I talk about the changes to the way we're working today and the effects those changes are having on our client relationships. It's a great conversation as always!

Josh’s approach to business has always been about creating an organization that is strong, secure, and able to avoid distraction. Throughout his career in the coffee industry, he relied on the unusual metaphor of the lobster to unite the team and prepare the organization. Awareness that lobsters never stop growing and of the trauma they experience during molt can remind any business to enjoy the ups while preparing for the downs that always come.

His book Growing Like a Lobster was motivated by Josh’s sincere desire to help others who seek to build extraordinary businesses. Through sharing his personal experiences and insights, Joshua offers a new way to confront challenges and simple approaches to building special and lasting organizations.

Josh has a B.A. in Political Science from Yale College and an M.B.A in Marketing and Finance from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Along the way to building brands within the world of coffee machine cleaning products, Josh worked in investment banking for Salomon Brothers and in marketing for Unilever Home and Personal Care.

In the hero’s journey, the hero or protagonist lives in the ordinary world and receives a call to go on an adventure. The hero is reluctant to follow the call but with the help of a guide, coach, or mentor, he or she moves deeper into the adventure.

In today’s episode, I focus on the initial call -- the call to adventure.

  • What is calling you?
  • What gets your adrenaline pulsing?
  • What breaks your heart about the world right now?
  • What has the ability to knock you out of your current existence onto a path where the outcome is unknown but you can’t stop yourself from following that path even if you tried?

One of the most iconic scenes in American film is in the original "Raiders of the Lost Ark" where Indiana Jones comes face to face with one of his greatest fears on his quest to find the Ark of the Covenant -- a pit full of snakes. We all have our own version of a pit full of snakes that can stop us if we let it. The question is, will we?

-David Foster Wallace, award-winning American author

In today's episode, I explore this quote and the role Truth plays in assisting us as we walk the road to becoming more of who we are. Why is it that so many people go through their lives without ever getting at the truth about why we're here with this one precious life we've been granted? Why do we waste so much time on things that don't matter when we could be exploring the Truth about ourselves so as to live a more extraordinary life? This is what's on tap in today's episode...enjoy!

You're in for a special treat! Today I'm talking with Nigel Bennett (Founder of AquaGaurd), Todd Palmer (INC 5000 CEO & President 6x), and Andy Buyting (Founder & CEO of Tulip Media Group) about what they call "lessons from the edge" and how we can thrive in a time of massive change. Each of my guests has suffered financial uncertainty, major loss, and serious doubt about whether or not he could move forward.

They call themselves the "3CEOs" and they are currently on a global virtual tour helping people find hope and optimism in what can feel like a grim situation.

They hit on topics including facing bankruptcy, finding an identity outside a family business, and having to make the painful decision to fire your entire staff and start from scratch. They don’t mince words. They genuinely care about entrepreneurial and business success.

You’re going to love this conversation!

I worked for a company in the 2000s where one of the messages leadership drilled into our heads was “You’re not here to be average.”

The products we sold were not average. The sales team was not average. The owner of the company was not average. And these were good things. I loved hearing this message over and over again because it helped me when times got tough, as times did then, and as times do now.

Reminding myself that I’m not here to be average still helps center me all these years later.

I got to thinking about this phrase today when I was scrolling through Instagram and I saw a list Ramit Sethi posted on his feed called “5 thoughts on standing out.” If you haven’t heard of Ramit, he’s the author of the best selling book I Will Teach You to Be Rich. He has also built a sizable online business based on that book.

Here’s what’s on the list:

-The rarest thing in the world is a strong point of view

-You’re not trying to serve everyone, just the right people

-There’s always room for the best

-Creating a real business should be hard and it should take time

-Choose your heroes carefully

What stands out for you on this list? Are you choosing to live an average life or an extraordinary one? How can you tell?

That's the topic of today's episode.

When actors forget their lines during filming, they are known to call out to the crew off-camera, "LINE!" Cue cards in hand, the crew responds, the actors remember, and filming resumes -- or doesn't, as the case may be when actors for whatever reason cannot recall what they are supposed to say.

Today was one of those days when I thought I was ready for my scenes...but discovered I needed help with my lines halfway through the session. The lesson I share with you is short and sweet and oh-so-relatable as we all continue doing our best in conditions that have thrown us off our lines in a million different ways.

The brutality of someone not loving us anymore or even in the first place is the fuel for some of the greatest music, art, literature, and poetry humanity has ever created. Every opera ever made has at its core the theme of betrayal and lost love. So does every play by Shakespeare. Old-style country music does too. Many music artists have become millionaires singing about suffering and cheating and lying and getting kicked around.

In this second part of exploring the chapter "People Are Not Loyal and Loving All the Time" from David Richo's book The Five Things We Cannot Change and the Happiness We Find by Embracing Them, I offer some ways of working through the times when we've been betrayed or feeling the brutal sting of having our heart broken.

Today I am going to teach about the fifth thing we cannot change based on David Richo’s book titled The Five Things We Cannot Change and The Happiness We Find by Embracing Them. If you’ve been listening for a while, you’ve probably caught the last several episodes. Each one builds on the other but I’ve also designed them so they stand on their own.

So far I’ve covered everything changes and ends, things don’t always go according to plan, life isn’t always fair, and pain is a part of life.

This final segment is called people are not loving and loyal all the time and if I’m being honest, this chapter is arguably the meatiest so I’ve decided to break it into two separate shows starting with part 1 today. I’ll frame the content for you and then in the next episode, I’ll get into some tactics you can use to work through the times in life when you’re facing this truth.

In today's episode, I tackle a topic most of us work hard to avoid: pain. It's the fourth reality about life we cannot change that author David Richo writes about in his book, The Five Things We Cannot Change and the Happiness We Find by Embracing Them.

I also draw some wisdom from Pema Chodron's book, When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times, which I highly recommend.

Today's show is focused on a key lesson taken from the book, The Five Things We Cannot Change and the Happiness We Find by Embracing Them by David Richo.

As we are each forced to step up and face a new reality given current global conditions, the five things Richo points out become even more important to study and understand. Resisting them is futile while embracing them unlocks us from misery and suffering.

Did you know that the subconscious mind accounts for 95-98% of all of our decision making and reactive measures? Removing the blocks in our thought patterns can completely change the trajectory of everything moving forward.

Today’s PYP MVP Malorie Nicole helps entrepreneurs and driven professionals remove their mental barriers stopping them from creating the life they want. Stress, overwhelm, and income caps aren’t solely just a business problem. She helps people solve this with subconscious belief work and mindset growth so they can not only make the money they desire but feel the way they want to feel. She also helps small to midsize leadership teams in companies grow further faster by implementing emotional intelligence in their work.

Today's episode of the Play Your Position Podcast is the first of a micro-series I am starting with the Founder and CEO of Everything Webinar, Kimberli Allen. In an uncertain world, entrepreneurs like Nigel Bennett are our best hope for the future.

At a young age, Nigel was shocked to witness first-hand the real impact of oil spills on our natural world. After almost being shot down by FARC guerrillas on the Venezuela-Colombia border and being forced to escape Egypt while working for his father’s oil spill contingency planning company, he decided to break away and start Aqua-Guard Spill Response. Aqua-Guard now provides equipment and services that protect water, the planet’s most precious resource, in over 100 countries.

His extraordinary journey from dyslexic high school graduate to global entrepreneur, adventurer and philanthropist have much to teach us about responsibility, freedom and the bravery that surfaces in moments when everything is on the line.

In Nigel’s book Take That Leap - Risking It All for What Really Matters, he recounts his unanticipated adventures as an entrepreneur, emerging philanthropist and always avid outdoorsman. Readers get a peek inside Nigel’s head as he negotiates deals with the big boys and wrestles with the myths surrounding work/life balance and being an entrepreneur.

He takes readers along the crazy challenges of simultaneously launching a startup and a family all the way through to the even zanier challenges of becoming a steward of Pachamama (Mother Nature). He shares how he tested his limits in extreme outdoor adventures, built homes for the homeless with his wife and children, and discovered his big “Why?” with the indigenous people of the Amazon.

If your appetite for adventure isn't whetted after listening to today's conversation with Nigel Bennett, I'm not sure what could!

Enjoy the show. :-)
